Ex-Michigan Reps. Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat

Some questioned state Rep. Todd Courser's sanity in 2015 when it surfaced that he asked a staffer to help float a fake story about messing with a male prostitute in Lansing to cover up his extramarital affair with fellow lawmaker Cindy Gamrat.

Now, Ingham County Circuit Judge William Collette is raising questions whether the former lawmaker -- who resigned in September 2015 right before he was about expelled from the House -- is mentally competent to stand trial on a criminal perjury charge.

Collette ordered a mental competency competency exam on Wednesday to determine if he's fit to stand trial, reports Jonathan Oosting of  The Detroit News.

Why? Other than the crazy story he made up, it's unclear what prompted the judge to order an exam.

The state Attorney General's office charged Courser, a Tea Party Republican, and Gamrat in early 2016 with a host of criminal counts including felony misconduct in office. The judge ended up dropping all the charges against Gamrat. Courser, who is an attorney, now only faces one charge of perjury.

Courser's attorney Matthew DePerno did not immediately return two voicemails seeking comment or respond to an email from The Detroit News. The Attorney General's office declined comment..

A spokesperson for Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, whose office is prosecuting the case, declined to comment to The News.
