Jack Robinson

Jack Robinson, who opened his first Perry drugstore in 1957 after serving in the U.S. Army, and went on to build a big chain, died Tuesday at his home in Bloomfield Hills. He was 85.

A biography on the Ira Kauffman Chapel website states that over 38 years he built up a company with operations in eight states that included drug stores, auto parts stores and health care businesses.

Perry Drug Stores, Inc. was a publicly traded until 1995, when it was acquired by Rite Aid Corporation of Camp Hill, Pa. , the bio said.  At the time of the acquisition, Perry Drug Stores had annual sales of $750 million.  

In early 1996, he founded In early 1996, Robinson founded the JAR Group, which specialized in retail and residential real estate development and management. He served as the chairman and CEO.

His obituary lists a number of organizations that he was director of:

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan, the Federation Apartments, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Holocaust Memorial Center, the Weizmann Institute of Science, The Food Bank of Oakland County, and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, of which he is also a past chairman.

A funeral is set for Friday at 10 a.m. at the Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield.
