Sprucing up along East Jefferson Avenue at the city line border usually happens on Grosse Pointe Park 's side.
Here's a nice change.
Bill Laitner of the Detroit Free Press reports, thanks to a $650,000 grant to Jefferson East, a nonprofit group that spurs development, that changes will be made on the Detroit side including landscaped center islands like those that enhance the suburb's side of East Jefferson.
The greening will be for five blocks, Laitner writes.
The "islands, along with a narrower roadway, aim to deter speeders by creating denser traffic flow in more attractive surroundings — a phenomenon called traffic calming," the Freep writes.
Changes will make the area more pedestrian-friendly for shoppers and school kids, and safer for cyclists.
