The Jewish Community Center in Oak Park, which has served the community since the 1950s, is slated to close by Sept. 1 unless a donor comes forward to save it, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Last week, the boards of the Jewish Community Center and the combined boards of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and United Jewish Foundation voted to shutter the facility, which is losing about $1 million a year, Niraj Warikoo of the Detroit Free Press reports. The JCC in West Bloomfield, will remain open.

The move was criticized by some in the Oak Park area, who say the center has been an anchor in a community that is increasingly drawing young Jewish people. They feel the Oak Park center is being ignored because it's in more of a working-class community compared to the West Bloomfield area.
