Ambassador Bridge

Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Moroun seems to be adding to his odd mix of allies in his fight to push through Proposal 6 and knock out Gov. Rick Snyder's plans for a new Detroit-Windsor bridge.

Local 299, one of Michigan's largest Teamsters locals -- the one Jimmy Hoffa once headed up -- has agreed to support Moroun's ballot proposal after he promised to use union labor when he builds a second bridge, the Detroit News reports. Proposal 6 would require voters to approve the building of any new bridges in Michigan.

The endorsement brings together an odd collection of supporters. Earlier this month, anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist announced his endorsement of Moroun's ballot proposal.

The News reports that Teamsters Local 299 president Kevin Moore said Snyder won't guarantee he'll use union labor. The UAW has decided to remain neutral on Snyder's plan with the Canadian government to build a $2.1 billion crossing.

The News reports that the local has 5,000 members, 1,700 of whom are laid off. It represents the toll booth, traffic and maintenance employees who staff the Ambassador Bridge. It also represents carpenters, pipefitters and other skilled trades could work on building the new bridge.
