Farid Fata, the doctor accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients and ordering unnecessary treatments, likely will remain in jail until trial.
Fata's lawyers asked a federal judge Wednesday to lower his bond from $9 million to $500,000. Judge Paul Borman refused.
Prosecutors insist the Oakland County doctor could flee to his native country, Lebanon. They say they’re still not sure if they’ve found all his money.
Borman said Fata had the “motive and the means to flee” to his native Lebanon. Outside the courtroom, patients hugged each other and cheered the judge’s decision, Orlander Brand-Williams reports.
Meanwhile, a protest by former patients and relatives of some of those who have died protested against Fata outside the court house before the hearing began.
