George Calicut Jr., 56, who was convicted of a Detroit murder in 1999, was released from prison on Tuesday after 27 years as the result of a false confession and convincing DNA evidence, the Detroit News reports.
The News reports that Wayne County Judge Bradley Cobb vacated the sentence and dismissed the charges.
Calicut Jr., 56, was convicted of murdering Virgie Perkins and sentenced to life in prison as the result of what prosecutors, the Michigan Innocence Clinic and Circuit Judge Bradley Cobb deemed to be a false confession elicited by Detroit Police Detective Barbara Simon, as well as DNA evidence that excluded Calicut as a suspect, The News reports.
Calicut, who was being held at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, appeared in court via Zoom and started crying after the charges were vacated, The News reports.
