U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds on Monday ordered Kwame Kilpatrick and his co-defendants to be ready for trial Sept. 6.

She rejected  a defense request to delay the racketeering conspiracy case against Kilpatrick, the disgraced former mayor of Detroit, by four months.

"This case demands closure and the public has the right to see the matter move forward," Edmunds said during a hearing in federal court.

Kilpatrick was indicted in June 2010 on tax and fraud charges. Six months later, he was indicted alongside his father, Bernard Kilpatrick; city contractor Bobby Ferguson; and former Detroit Water and Sewerage Department Director Victor Mercado on racketeering conspiracy charges.

They are facing charges that could send them to prison for up to 30 years if convicted.
