William Melendez

Convicted ex-Inkster police officer William Melendez became one of those cops who contributed to the national conversation about white police officers abusing black citizens.

You might recall Melendez, 47, was convicted two months ago in Wayne Count Circuit Court of two felonies in the beating of motorist Floyd Dent in January 2015.

On Tuesday morning, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Vonda Evans will sentence him.

Elisha Anderson of the Detroit Free Press reports that the  sentencing guidelines range from two years and five months to four years and nine months. Prosecutors would like an “upward departure” from the guidelines.

“The guidelines do not adequately reflect scoring for the absolute betrayal of the trust and authority placed in the defendant to protect the community and uphold the laws of this state,” prosecutors said in a court filing, according to the Freep. it said. “The defendant’s actions have had a severe detrimental impact on both the police community and the community at large.”
