Justin Verlander was this close to his third career no-hitter Friday night, but Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison singled up the middle with one out in the ninth inning.
Still, Verlander got the win, and he struck out 12 as the Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-0.
Verlander dominated the Pirates from start to finish, allowing only three baserunners, on the hit and two walks.
Harrison nearly ended the bid earlier in the game, with a hard-hit fly ball that almost flew over Don Kelly’s head in center field.
Pittsburgh ended the contest with a groundout to shortstop, as the crowd of 41,661 fans roared at Comerica Park.
