An 18-year-old woman from the Kalamazoo area was killed Thursday when a car plowed into pedestrians along three Times Square blocks in New York, MLive reports.

Alyssa Elsman of suburban Portage was the only fatality among 23 people struck by a suspected drunk driver. Her 13-year-old sister was injured. They were visiting Manhattan with their mother.

Elsman was a 2016 graduate of Portage Central High School and worked as a carhop at Sonic Drive-In in Portage.

The driver, Richard Rojas, 26, was taken into custody after a traffic agent tackled him as he fled from his car, The New York Times reports.

Rojas, a Navy veteran, has past drunk driving arrests. He may have been been high on K2 and allegedly told the cops that Thursday was the “last day on earth," according to the New York Daily News.
