In the special primary election Wednesday night in the west side of Metro Detroit, Republican Kerry Bentivolio of Milford easily won the election over former state Sen. Nancy Cassis.
He won with 10,280 votes in Wayne and Oakland counties, to Cassis' 8,804. They were running to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, R-Livonia.
Bentivolio will now advance to a special general election Nov. 6, where he will face David Curson of Belleville, who was the only Democrat on the primary ballot.
The other Republicans running were Kenneth Crider, who received 1,208 votes, Carolyn Kavanagh, who got 2,654 votes, and Steve King, who got 1,715 votes.
Cassis came within 25 votes of beating Bentivolio in Oakland County, but was running more than 1,500 votes behind in Wayne.
The winner in November will end up serving only about a month, finishing out McCotter's term, which ends Dec. 31.
