Here's what post-industrial Pontiac looks like: A sports facility doubles its size by buying 16 acres from General Motors.
Lauren Abdel-Razzaq of The Detroit News was there Wednesday when the owners of Ultimate Soccer Arenas announced the expansion at an event attended by Oakland County's execuive, Pontiac's mayor, its emergency manager and some council members.
Ultimate Soccer Arenas is expanding on South Boulevard in Pontiac."There's a future in Pontiac and we're proud to be a part of it," co- owner George Derderian said. . . .
He and and business partner Tom Korpela are increasing their holdings from 16 to 32 acres, adding 650 new parking spaces, a 60,000-square-foot indoor facility with turf, and two outdoor fields. In total, the facility will be more than 335,000 square feet inside.
The indoor arena on South Boulevard, open since 2007, is used by youth teams, the Michigan Bucks, the Detroit Mechanix and lacrosse teams. It has a restaurant, coffee shop and pro shop.
"This is an exciting thing to have in Oakland County and an exciting thing to have in Pontiac," County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said Wednesday, according to The News.
