With a Kresge Arts Fellowship in hand, Oren Goldenberg dropped another episode of his "Detroit (Blank) City" web series this week.
This installment features a music video about the perils of parking an Audi and purchasing coconut water in the city. Sometimes we forget the sacrifices made by Detroit's creative class saviors to make this city the 7.2-mile greater downtown area world-class.
Also, in episode two, the plucky solutionists at the Save Detroit Think Tank develop a great idea to turn the broken glass so abundant on Detroit's streets into literal precious jewels for watches, earrings, necklaces, and all manner of luxury jewelry. But, as we learn for Detroit (Blank) City's resident newsman Billy Bondsmen, the increased value in authentic Detroit broken glass only leads to more broken car windows. But, of course, that means more glass to sell so win-win?
In total, another solid effort from the Detroit (Blank) City folks. The whole thing is that much more funny because, with Goldenberg's Kresge grant, this project is basically funded by the very people they're spoofing.
"Goldenberg critiques society through dance, documentary and satire while creating new rituals for transformation," says the Kresge Arts website.
That's foundation-speak for "he makes us laugh at ourselves."
For that, everybody, not just Kresge should send money and other fine things to Goldenberg and the rest of the Detroit (Blank) City team.
You know, so they can create even more and better new rituals of transformation.
