You can now hunt wolves in Michigan, thanks to a lame duck session bill signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder.
Detroit Free Press: The wolves were removed from the endangered species list in January, but only the Department of Natural Resources is allowed to manage the wolf population, which has begun to encroach upon U.P. towns. The Humane Society of the United States opposed the bill, saying that people already are allowed to kill wolves that threaten pets or livestock and that a hunting season was unnecessary.
Freedom to kill one of the Upper Peninsula's 700 gray wolves means more and better jobs.
Additionally, the ballot application--filled out by registered voters at a polling place on election day--will now include language reminding voters that they must be citizens in order to vote. Similar language already exists on voter applications. Snyder had previously vetoed a bill placing a separate question and checkbox on the application for a ballot.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson had sought the checkbox, and then the application language, because she said some non-citizen immigrants had accidentally registered to vote without reading the voter application language about qualifications. Those same people can now not read the same language on the election day ballot application. -- JTW
