Candidates: Get the gloves on.

Darren Nichols of The Detroit News reports that Detroit mayoral candidates Mike Duggan and Benny Napoleon will square off in three debates this month.

The first one will be a televised debate Oct. 20, on CBS 62.  Another one will be hosted by  Detroit Economic Club on Oct. 23 at Cobo Center and a third on Oct. 29, which will be hosted by WXYZ and moderated by Chuck Stokes. The last one will be hosted with the Booker T. Washington Business Association and the Detroit Black Chamber, the News reported.

The debates come in the final stretch of what has been a fairly dull campaign.

“We are at a crossroads in this city and face a critical election,” Napoleon said, according to The News. “. . . The debates will be an opportunity for voters to hear the facts on our track records and the contrasting visions. They are a crucial part in arming Detroit voters with the accurate information before they go to the polls to choose the next mayor.”

Duggan campaign manager Bryan Barnhill II told The News:

“The debates may provide an opportunity for undecideds to change their minds. Our hope is after watching the debates they will support Mike Duggan because of the plan he has for Detroit moving forward. Our entire campaign has been about creating opportunities for Mike to engage with Detroiters in a substantive fashion. We’ve done a fair amount of engagement with people out in the community.” -- Allan Lengel
