Local media report the donations announced Thursday total $2.28 million and come from the Kresge Foundation, AARP, the Elaine & Leo Stern Foundation and the State of Michigan Council for the Arts. Kresge's $1.3 million contribution will help build a public plaza and renovate three buildings for education and community programs.

WXYZ shared a statement from Motown Museum CEO Robin R. Terry:

“2018 has been a stellar year for our expansion campaign, with the momentum we’ve experienced continuing to serve as a powerful sign of the significance of this movement and the meaningful impact the Motown story has both here in Detroit and around the world.”

The Motown Museum launched its expansion fundraising campaign in 2016. It plans to build a 50,000-square-foot campus that includes a performance theater, recording studios, and meeting spaces. The campus would be anchored by the Hitsville house.
