Chris Chelios was no slouch. He was one of the longest tenured players in the NHL, and he played on three Stanley Cup championship teams -- one with the Montreal Canadiens and two with the Detroit Red Wings.
Now, comes his son Jake Chelios, who has been called up from the Red Wings' Grand Rapids team to play for the Wings, reports Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. The 28-year-old's debut was Friday at Little Caesars Arena where the Wings beat New Jersey 4-0.
“It’s great, a great opportunity for him,” Chelios told the Free Press. “It’s been a good year in Grand Rapids and it’s great to see them calling up the kids and giving them a chance.
“I hope it’s not a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but it’s great. Good to be back here and good to see my kid playing. Even if he just gets in one or two games, at least he made it this far and he’ll have bragging rights to his kids and grandkids.”
Chelios advised his offspring to “get hit, hit somebody, get into it early and relax and play. Just have fun. There’s no way he’s not nervous.”
