The Detroit Lions had a lousy 2012 season on the field, going 4-12. The team ended up losing its last eight games.

Off the field, in the front office, where a football team is supposed to make a profit no matter how badly it sucks, Detroit failed at that.

In fact, Forbes magazine reported that the Lions were the only team of 32 in the NFL to lose money in 2012. You might find it heartening that at least the team distinguished itself in the league in some way.

The magazine reports that the Lions had $248 million in revenues and had an operating loss of $3.5 million. The team was valued at $900 million.

Not surprising, the Dallas Cowboys topped the list of teams with profits of $250.7 million. The New England Patriots made $139.2 million and the Washington Redskins earned $104.3 million, according to Forbes. -- Allan Lengel
