Madonna

Is Madonna having second thoughts about dissing her hometown, Rochester Hills, out of guilt, hindsight or the fact that she's going on tour in September and plans to perform at Joe Louis on Oct. 1?

You might recall she appeared on the Howard Stern Show in March and said that she felt like an "outsider" growing up in the "all-white" suburb after her family moved from Pontiac to Rochester Hills. She also referred to the denizens of Rochester Hills as "basic, provincial-thinking people.”

"I felt like they were members of country clubs and they had manicures and they wore nice clothes, and I didn't fit in," she said. "I felt like a country bumpkin."

Now, she's changed her tune.

She tells Gary Graff of the Oakland Press:

“I appreciate my provincial upbringing."

“To me it’s really important that I came from the Midwest,” she explained, “with my father and people that I was surrounded with, very strong work ethic and my practical approach to work, and not a lot of frills.

“I don’t think I would be as creative as I am if I’d grown up surrounded by everything at my fingertips. The fact that I came from a small town in the Midwest has a lot to do with the kind of open notebook that I had to start my journey of creativity.”
