Mary Barra poses with a 2011
Chevrolet Cruze/GM

The rarified air at the Big Three in Detroit -- the CEO posts -- has always been filled by white guys.

But that could be changing.

Reuters reports that General Motors' top dog, CEO Dan Akerson, says the car company's top ranking female exec, Mary Bara, is one of his potential successors.

He thinks women deal better with change, Reuters reports, and  if anyone knows change, it's General Motors, which has undergone a major transformation under the Obama Administration.

Barra, 50, is the global product development chief.

Akerson said of Bara's chances: "I wouldn't be surprised if she were, but I wouldn't handicap it today and I think there are a good number of candidates."
The selection will be up to the GM board. -- A.L.
