New Black Panther leader and Daily Show superstar Malik Shabazz really likes mayoral candidate Mike Duggan. But we knew that already. What we only just learned this week is that Shabazz told Business Insider that his connection to Duggan is deeper than many realized: "I see a lot of myself" in Duggan, he told the national click-bait site. Then he said a lot of things we've heard before.

Business Insider: "We've got six-foot-high grass all cross the city," Shabazz says. "We've got 10, 12, 15, feet-high weeds, we have illegal dump sites...[people] are breaking into everybody's houses. Thieves who steal copper and aluminum when you leave the house — now they don't care now and steal when you're in the house."

Which is why he's endorsing white candidate Mike Duggan, for mayor.

"He's the first white guy who really wasn't afraid of me, so I dug that," he told us by phone recently.

Shabazz adds that Duggan, like himself, is misunderstood.

It must be tough being Mike Duggan and Malik Shabazz, going through life without people really understanding who they are on the inside, or understanding their feelings and hopes and aspirations. Just a thought, but if either man wants to give Detroit a glimpse into their tender souls, maybe they'd allow the city's leading online news site that is located in Campus Martius to publish excerpts from their dream journals.
