Police arrested a 44-year-old man Tuesday who tried to enter Romulus Middle School with a handgun and fired the weapon near the school.

Police said that shortly before 10 a.m., officers responded to the school at 37300 Wick Road following a report of an “active shooter.”

School employees saw a man with a handgun trying to enter the main doors and immediately implemented a lockdown. There were reports of shots fired near the school.

Officers quickly arrested the man near the main entrance and seized the gun.

“There is a significant police presence on campus, along with media on site, and keeping students in place allows school staff and law enforcement to manage the situation safely and effectively,” Porsche Laster, president of the Romulus Community Schools Board of Education, said on Facebook. “Please be assured that students are safe. The school is currently under a soft lockdown as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.”
