An FBI affidavit earlier this year accused Khalil Abu Rayyan of Dearborn Heights of talking about violent "acts of terror and martyrdom -- including brutal acts against police officers, (Detroit) churchgoers and others -- on behalf of the foreign terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and Levant."
"During these conversations," the affidavit said, " Abu-Rayyan consistently expressed support for ISIL and repeatedly expressed his desire to commit a martyrdom operation."
But terrorism charges aren't always the easiest to prove.
On Tuesday, Rayyan, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of false statement to acquire a firearm and possession of a firearm by prohibited person before U.S. District Judge George Caram Steeh, Jennifer Chambers of the Detroit News reports. There were no terrorism charges in play.
Sentencing is set for Jan. 9.
