Sebastian Gregerson, 29, of Detroit, who was tracked by the local FBI counterterrorism unit for more than a year, and who was busted early this month with a cache of weapons, was indicted Thursday in federal court, but not on terrorism charges, the Detroit Free Press reports.
A five-page indictment charges Gregson with possessing and receiving explosives, grenades and TNT, Tresa Baldas writes..
Court appointed defense lawyer David Tholen argued in court:: "The government doesn't have the case it thinks it has. . . . If they have more, bring it."
A local lawyer who has handled these types of cases offers theories.
"I suspect that the government is biding their time, that the investigation is continuing," prominent Detroit defense attorney Bill Swor tells, the Freeps. "Or, it may be that the government believes that this is their best charge and that they’ve decided to keep a very tight case."
When FBI agents raided Gregerson’s home on the west side of Detroit, they found several CDs marked “Anwar al-Awlaki,” a senior al-Qaida recruiter who died in 2011.
