Rev. Edward Belczak

Priests often hear confessions from people who have sinned. On Tuesday, it was Rev. Edward Belczak who did the confessing.

Beczak, who is accused of steaing $573,000 from St. Thomas More Church in Troy, pleaded guilty to mail fraud Tuesday in federal court, Candice Williams writes in The Detroit News. 

“Why am I pleading guilty?” the Rev. Edward Belczak said during his appearance before U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Tarnow, according to The News.. “Because I am.”

Sentencing is  Dec. 1. 

The News reports:

Belczak was originally charged in 2014 with a five-count indictment accusing him of stealing money from the church from 2004-12. Last week, the government amended charges against Belczak to mail fraud, accusing him of sending incomplete financial reports to the Archdiocese of Detroit in 2010.
