How many driver's license suspensions is too many?

Jonas Smith, 57, of Hazel Park has 53.

Now he's accused of third-time felony drunken driving after Ferndale police say he stole some toiletry items from a store on Sunday and fled police before crashing into a pole Detroit where he was arrested, Mike McConnell of the Daily Tribune reports.

“He sat right there in the car and was kind of moaning -- not because he was injured but because he said he didn’t want to go back to jail,”  Ferndale Police Sgt. Baron Brown tells the paper.

The Tribune reports:

Smith was released from prison in August after serving time on a previous drunken driving conviction. He has also served time for other crimes, including fleeing police, felony assault, cocaine possession, three previous charges of fleeing police and two prior drunken driving convictions, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records.

Smith was arraigned Tuesday in Ferndale 43rd District Court on charges of fleeing and eluding police, a 10-year felony, and misdemeanor counts of retail fraud and driving on a suspended license. He is jailed on $25,000 cash bond.
