It seems these days that everything associated with the Wayne County Jail is a big mess.

John Wisely of the Detroit Free Press reports that condition at the county's two old downtown jails are so bad the U.S. Marshals Service is moving about 200 federal prisoners out of them and into the county-owned William Dickerson Detention Facility in Hamtramck instead.

Wisely writes that some key problems include leaky roofs, high temperatures and plugged pipes

He writes:

That news is yet another blow to the county, which is already mired in controversy surrounding its over-budget and now-halted new jail facility being constructed downtown. Because of that project, some charge that the county has underspent on maintenance at the current downtown jails.

The Freep also reports that the shuttered new Wayne County jail project costs have ballooned to $154.5 million.

That project is currently under FBI investigation.
