Detroit's mayporal primary is still four months away -- plenty of time for voters' views to shift. Currenbtly, though, Benny Napoleon has reason to feel good about the latest poll reported by Matt Helms of the Free Press.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has taken a significant lead over former Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan in the race for Detroit mayor in one of the first big polls done since Napoleon formally launched his candidacy.

The poll conducted this week by Main Street Strategies, a Lansing-based political advocacy and communications firm, found Napoleon ahead with the support of 39% of likely Democratic primary voters in Detroit, compared to 35% for Duggan

While a lead of 4 percentage points may not seem significant, look what happens when four other candidates are eliminated from poll choices:

In a head-to-head match up, Napoleon’s lead grows larger, the poll found, with 45% of voters favoring him and 35% for Duggan, with 20% undecided.

That’s a strong indication that Napoleon could pick up a lot of votes from candidates who don’t make it past the August primary that will whittle the field down to two candidates for the November general election.
