Jim Schaefer's coverage of the Kwame Kilpatrict trial is the "Digital Presence" category winner.

Detroit Free Press staff members won nine first-place awards Saturday night, including one for general excellence and four in sports categories, at a Lansing presentation by the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors group.

Thirty-three daily newspapers, divided into three categories by paid circulation size, submitted news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2012. Illinois editors judged the Michigan entries.
