Call it the average person's Whole Foods. Call it what you like.

Whatever. A popular chain stores opening in Detroit is a good thing.

Early this morning,  dozens showed up as the new Meijer superstore opened up at  Eight Mile and Woodward in Detroit, Fox2 reports.

It's the city's first Meijer, and the opening follows the high-touted opening of Whole Foods in Midtown.

"At at time of great hand-wringing in Detroit over the city’s Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing, the establishment of such a significant retail anchor in a crucial area could be a real boon," Forbes magazine says.

Meijer is a combination of department and grocery store.

It's part of the Gateway Shopping Mall, which also includes Marshalls.

The company hopes to draw customers from nearby suburbs like Ferndale and Southfield, as well as Detroiters. Meijer recently distributed flyers in surrounding communities, including nearby Huntington Woods.
