Metro Detroit chef Chad Barrett, a two-time contestant on the Food Network's "Guy's Grocery Games," faces domestic violence charges in Macomb County involving his ex-wife, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Barrett, who had plans to head a new restaurant in Chesterfield, awaits a July 16 pretrial hearing on domestic violence charges in 42nd District Court in New Baltimore. The allegations involve former spouse Kari Barrett, a 40-year-old dental hygienist in Chesterfield Township.
“The abuse started rather quickly," she told Mark Kurlyandchik of the Detroit Free Press. "And I didn’t want anybody else to be a victim of his abuse and I needed to do something about it. So I decided to speak with the New Baltimore Police Department and presented my evidence to them and filed a complaint."
He's also been accused by others of abuse on social media, the Freep reports.
Chad Barrett told the paper: "Everything is being handled as libel with my attorneys and that’s all I have to say."
Barrett had been preparing to open Feast on 23 Mile. On Tuesday, the restaurant posted on Facebook:
"Given the recent developments, we would like to address Chef Chad's involvement here at Feast. He was hired as the executive chef, he is not, and has never been owner or partner at Feast. That being said he is no longer a part of Feast team and is not involved with Feast in anyway shape or form."
He appeared on the Food Network in 2017 and 2019 on a show hosted by Guy Fieri. Last year, WDIV featured him in a story about cooking.
