The director of Metro Detroit’s regional water authority wants Flint to stay with the system and forget about hooking up to a Genesee County authority pipeline due to come online later this year.

“I have extended an offer for conversation,” Sue McCormick, CEO of the Great Lakes Water Authority, or GLWA, tells The Detroit News. “I have met with Flint Mayor Karen Weaver once and indicated that we would certainly be willing to take another look at what kind of agreement we would be able to come to.”

The whole Flint water mess started three years ago when Flint announced it was leaving the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s system to join the Karegnondi Water Authority, or KWA, a regional water authority based in Genesee County.

The city hoped to save money.

But in the interim, while the KWA was being completed, the city switched to the Flint River as its source of water. That water caused lead to loosen from pipes and contaminate tap water.
