Michael Fulmer, a 23-year-old righty called up by the Tigers from the Toledo Mud Hens last spring, is American League Rookie of the Year.

Here's the team's announcement Monday night after his selection by the Baseball Writers Association of America:

In his major league debut April 29 against the Minnesota Twins, Fulmer earned the win after allowing two earned runs over five innings and striking out four in a 9-2 Tigers victory.

Three weeks later in his first home start, Fulmer gave up just one earned run and got 11 strikeouts over seven innings to beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
