Filmmaker Michael Moore clashes again with the Motion Picture Association of America over the R rating for his new documentary, "Where to Invade Next" (trailer below). The designation means viewers under 17 can see the film only if accompanied by an adult..
The Michigan director says it's all political.
In 2004, Moore clashed with the MPAA after trying to lower the R rating of "Fahrentheit 9/11," The Guardian newspaper reports. In 2002, film critic Roger Ebert slammed the board for giving Moore’s "Bowling for Columbine" the same rating.
On Saturday night, Moore lashed out at the board at a premiere in Hollywood, Bryan Alexander of USA Today writes. The film opens Dec. 23.
"I believe there is always a political underlying thing with the MPAA," Moore said during a Q-and-A after the film. "And we’re going to fight them hard this time."
"Teenagers are the most important audience for this film, and I want them to see it," says Moore. "I’m really upset."
The film features Moore in countries in European nations exploring those countries' alternative methods of dealing with social and economic ills experienced in the United States.
The R rating is based on “language, some violent images, drug use and brief graphic nudity,” according to the association.
