All in all, documentaries usually don't kill it at the box office. But Michael Moore's films have often done pretty well.
But this past weekend was a disappointment at the box office for his latest, "Fahrenheit 11/9," a documentary that aims at President Donald Trump and some Democrats as well.
The film grossed $3.1 million in ticket sales over the weekend, landing it in the eighth spot. It lagged behind "White Boy Rick," which grossed $5 million and came in sixth, according to Box Office Mojo. The House With a Clock in Its Walls grossed $26 million.
The "White Boy Rick" film, which is the story of convicted Detroit drug trafficker Richard Wershe Jr., has grossed $17.4 million since its release. This was the second weekend for the movie, which had a budget of $29 million.
The Wrap, an entertainment industry site, writes this about Moore's film:
While that opening still ranks in the top 15 highest openings for documentaries, other Moore films that have been released on similar screen numbers have performed better. The largest was the 2004 film “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which opened to $23.9 million on 868 screens and is still the highest grossing documentary of all-time with $119 million domestic.
But even Moore’s 2007 follow-up, “Sicko,” outperformed “11/9” with $3.6 million from 702 screens, while the 2009 film “Capitalism: A Love Story” opened to $4.4 million from 962 screens.
