The state's Covid-19 data released Friday afternoon shows the state's case numbers continue to climb, averaging 7,939 for each of the last two days. That represents a sharp increase over Wednesday's daily average of 3,142.
The state reports its Covid data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Eighty-three new deaths were also attributed to Covid, with 43 identified through a vital records review.
New totals for the entire pandemic are: 1,188,678 confirmed cases in Michigan and 22,767 deaths.(As of Nov. 5, 1,026,195 victims were classified as recovered.)
Case numbers have been trending steadily upward since midsummer. "I consider this to be our fourth surge,” Dr. Nick Gilpin of Beaumont Health said at a press conference Thursday morning, Michigan Radio reports.
"Starting in about late August, early September, we've been experiencing this slow burn, this slow, steady increase. ... And that number has gone over the last few months [from] a very slow slope, to in the last week or so a very sharp increase to where we currently are. ...
"I am very concerned about the trajectory of this new wave."
Today, children as young as 5 are being given vaccinations, and booster shots are available to most adults.
