The Michigan Democratic Party has produced a video mocking GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers for mispronouncing “Lapeer” in his recent campaign video. Rogers says “Lah-peer” instead of “Luh-peer.”

The mocking video features Democratic Senate candidates Haley Stevens, Mallory McMorrow, and Abdul El-Sayed, along with gubernatorial candidate Garlin Gilchrist II and several Lapeer residents, all correcting the pronunciation. There is both a Lapeer city and a Lapeer County.

“Hey Mike, maybe that’s how you say it in Florida, but in Michigan we call it Lapeer,” said Congresswoman Stevens in the video.

Democrats are trying to portray Rogers as a Florida resident who is out of touch with the state. Rogers bought a 4,700-square-foot home in Cape Coral, Florida, six months before former U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow announced her retirement on Jan. 5, 2023, according to Detroit Free Press columnist M.L. Elrick.

In July 2023, Rogers bought a small home in White Lake Township and subsequently registered to vote so he could run for the U.S. Senate in 2024, Elrick reported. He ended up losing to Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin.

Rogers is now running again for the Senate in 2026. President Donald Trump has endorsed him.

Rogers’ campaign did not respond Friday to a request from Deadline Detroit for comment.

The Michigan Democratic Party issued a statement on its website saying:

“Failed GOP Senate candidate and Florida resident Mike Rogers was caught mispronouncing ‘Lapeer’ in a video released by his campaign earlier this month. Bizarrely, his campaign team did not feel the need to correct their boss after he flubbed the name of the Michigan county — home to 90,000 people — before posting it to social media."

"In response, the Michigan Democratic Party released the following video from real Michiganders to help Rogers, a Florida mansion-dwelling multi-millionaire, get up to speed on how to actually pronounce ‘Lapeer.’ (It’s Luh-peer, not Lah-peer.)”
