A bill that would offer expungement for drunken or drugged drivers with just one such offense passed with bipartisan approval in the state House Thursday, Brige Michigan reports.

The bill is backed by Attorney General Dana Nessel, who has said she'll discuss it with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

"There are good people who, sometimes by virtue of circumstance, end up committing a crime, and currently it can never be removed from their record," Nessel tweeted Friday. "This is one piece of the expungement process in our state that is in serious need of reform."

Whitmer "pocket vetoed" a similar bill past in last year's lame duck session — meaning it died without her signature because the Legislature adjourned soon after it passed. She didn't explain why.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving opposes the reform, arguing the threat of a criminal record serves as a helpful deterrent.
