Michigan is among states receiving the least federal aid when compared to confirmed Covid cases and deaths due to a funding formula that benefits rural states.
Though Michigan will get nearly $4 billion under the $150 billion CARES package, an Associated Press analysis finds that only amounts to $88,000 per positive Covid case and $955,000 per Covid-related death. That ranks it 44th among states when measured by the number of positive tests and 46th when measured by deaths, The Detroit News reports.
Rural states, meanwhile, get an outsized share of the aid package, according to AP:
Their haul ranged from $2 million per positive test in Hawaii to nearly $3.4 million per test in Alaska. In Wyoming, with less than 600 positive cases, the $1.25 billion it received equates to 80 percent of its annual general state budget.
States worse off than Michigan, the analysis finds, include New York, with $24,000 per positive test, and New Jersey, with $27,000.
