The tension between the GOP and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer continues to escalate. President Donald Trump and the governor have exchanged repeated criticisms. And she's battled with state lawmakers over a host of issues including her emergency order during the Covid crisis.
Now this:
State GOP Chairwoman Laura Cox on Thursday criticized Whitmer after she made a comment to The Root, an online magazine whose slogan is "The Blacker the Content the Sweeter the Truth."
In a 27-minute video interview this week, Terrell Jermaine Starr of The Root asks Whitmer:, “How do you respond to people who say that if there were a group of black men who stormed the state Capitol that they would have been dead?”
Whitmer replies, “I understand why people say that, and I don’t disagree.”
Black and Latino demonstrators, some of them armed, appeared at the capitol May 28. That came after white demonstrators drew criticism for appearinig in previous demonstrations with assault rifles.
GOP chair Cox slammed Whitmer in an email, according to The Detroit News:
“Yet again, Gov. Whitmer has demonstrated that she is willing to do anything, and say anything, to capture the national spotlight and appease her progressive base in her quest for the Vice Presidency.”
“Whitmer’s inflammatory statement about risks to armed African Americans at the state Capitol is not only defamatory to the men and woman of law enforcement who protect her, but it’s also blatantly false,” Cox said.
Whitmer’s spokeswoman Tiffany Brown responded in an email:
"It's disappointing, but not surprising, that President Trump and the Michigan Republican Party continue to fan the flames of racial division. Gov. Whitmer won't be distracted by these petty partisan attacks that seek to divide Americans.”
