Michigan ranks third in the nation in the number of confirmed Covid deaths.
But it has the country's highest death rate among confirmed cases, according to WWMT, a CBS affiliate in Kalamazoo. As of Sunday, the state's death toll was 4,049.
Only New Jersey and New York have more lung virus fatalities.
But based on the percentage of cases, more than 9 percent of Michiganders who tested positive have died, compared to the second-highest state in the nation, Connecticut, which had a death rate of more than 8 percent.

Detroit-area deaths (3,320) rank fifth nationally among metropolitan regions, with a rate of .77 deaths per 1,000 residents, a New York Times interactive data base shows (chart below).
Other states have had a death rate of lower than 7 percent. Nationwide the death rate is 5.8 percent.
Experts tell the station that a lack of testing has likely inflated the death rate. But most states have had testing shortages too, and don't come close to Michigan’s numbers.
