The Michigan Nurses Association, the largest union and professional association for registered nurses and healthcare professionals in the state, announced Monday it is  endorsing Democrat Jocelyn Benson for governor.

“Jocelyn Benson has proven she won’t fold under pressure. When powerful interests push, she pushes back,” said Aaron McCormick, RN, MNA president in a statement. “As Secretary of State, she’s expanded access to the ballot for Michiganders across this state. And she’s shown a real willingness to listen to nurses and healthcare professionals about the challenges we’re facing. That kind of leadership matters.”

Other organizations that have endorse the secretary of state for governor include the Michigan Association of Justice, Michigan Democratic Party’s Black Caucus, EMILYs List, End Citizen United and more than two dozen members of the state Senate and House.

“I’m incredibly grateful to have the endorsement of the Michigan Nurses Association in my campaign to be Michigan’s next governor,” Benson said in a statement. “This campaign is about making sure the people who power our state’s economy and spend their careers serving others - like Michigan nurses - can afford to live here and thrive."

Benson is running against Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson in the Democratic primary.

The Democratic Party has become particularly concerned about former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan running as an independent, fearing he'll take away votes from the Democratic candidate and help the Republican candidate, which so far appears to be Congressman John James.
