Newly elected Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin will deliver the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday.
"Nothing short of a rising star in our party—she’s dedicated her life to our country," Sen. Chuck Schumer said Thursday in a post on X.
"She will lay out the fight to tackle the deep challenges we face and chart a path forward."
Trump's speech is not being called a "State of the Union" address, as that designation is typically reserved for addresses given after a full year in office.
Depending on her remarks, the high-profile response could elevate her national profile with Trump, which would likely lead to personal attacks on social media and television.
From 2019 to 2025, Slotkin served as a U.S. Representative. She was elected as Michigan's junior senator last November.
She attended Cranbrook Kingswood School and earned an undergraduate degree from Cornell University and a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
Before serving in Congress, she worked for the CIA, the Department of Defense and the State Department.
