Detroit is gaining another hotel.

The West Elm Hotel, with about 120 rooms, is planned for Detroit’s Midtown at the northeast corner of Cass and Canfield. Rates will run from $175 for a standard room to $400 for a suite.

West Elm, a Brooklyn-based furniture retailer, plans to open the hotel in 2018 on a site owned by Wayne State University and now used as a parking lot..

West Elm is affiliated with the retailer Williams-Sonoma. It also plans hotels in Charlotte, N.C.; Indianapolis; Savannah, Ga.; and Minneapolis. DDK Hotels, a new hospitality management firm set up by the parent company will run the properties.

"There is a growing desire among modern travelers to immerse themselves in the place they are visiting. They want a boutique experience, and expect great, reliable service that caters to their needs," DDK co-founder David Bowd says in a media release. "Our general managers will serve as innkeepers, and West Elm Hotels will focus on making real community connections for visitors and residents alike."

The hotel will help further energize an area that has clearly been part of Detroit's resurgence.

On Canfield, businesses include Traffic Jam & Snug, Shinola, Jolly Pumpkin, Third Man Records and Motor City Brewing. Around the corner, there's  the popular Avalon Bakery and on Cass Avenue there's a lineup of relatively new shops and a Thai restaurant.

We first saw a report of this project in The Detroit News.
