It would be an extraordinary power crowd if Politico magazine hosted a gathering of the big shots ranked as 50 "thinkers, doers and dreamers who really matter in this age of gridlock and dysfunction."

Politico praises the governor and mayor for "working beyond party lines . . . to raise the city from the ashes."
Detroit's mayor and Michigan's governor would rub shoulders with Pope Francis, two Supreme Court justices, U.S. senators, Edward Snowden and other headline-makers.
Mike Duggan and Rick Snyder are paired in the list's No. 31 spot for "working beyond party lines . . . to raise the city [of Detroit] from the ashes."
Despite their different politics, the duo at least share a theory of the case that they can turn the city around—and they’re demonstrating a very un-Washington type of cooperation to get there. . . .
Detroit has so far shown signs of incremental improvement: In the first six months of 2014, it decreased emergency response times by more than 30 percent, added 6,000 streetlights and established a home auction system, allowing people to bid for abandoned houses now owned by the city. There’s a long way to go, but Duggan and Snyder “have huge alignment,” the governor says, when it comes to getting the city’s numbers — finances and population — back on track as they set politics aside to do so.
Other pairings by Politico include Justices Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor, Edward Snowden and journalist Glenn Greenwald and gun control opponents Gabrielle Giffords and Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association. (See the full list here.)
