The Michigan State Fair closed in 2009, but county and community fairs continue to highlight Michigan's agricultural heritage and draw crowds. Michigan has 83 counties; there are 86 agricultural-based fairs, writes Cecil Angel in the Free Press.

On Monday, the Swine Show got under way as part of the unofficial beginning of the fair, even as volunteers worked  the grounds in Van Buren Township to put up exhibits. Carnival workers began setting up the rides.

In southeast Michigan, the Wayne County Fair will be competing with the Jackson County Fair; both run through Saturday. The Jackson County Fair attracted about 150,000 people last year. Rochowiak predicted up to 17,000 attendees for the Wayne County Fair.
