Tonya Berta: "Being in jail and away from my son has been an eye-opening experience."

Tonya Berta did a bad thing.

The 27-year-old Monroe County mother was drunk when she drove the wrong way down I-75 with her baby in the backseat last Dec. 8 around 4:15 a.m. near the I-696 interchange in Royal Oak.

On Tuesday, she was sentenced to eight months in jail and three years probation for operating while intoxicated with an occupant less than 16 and possession of a controlled substance, Fox 2 reports.

During a traffic stop, an officer discovered a 1-year-old boy asleep under a blanket without a car seat or any other restraints.

"Never in a million years did I think I would commit a crime such as this," she told Oakland County Circuit Judge Wendy Potts. "I thank God that it didn't end up worse. Being in jail and away from my son has been an eye-opening experience."

She said she was trying to address her alcoholism.

A sister now is her son's legal guardian.
