Through direct contributions and three super PACs, the Matty Moroun Family, and its connected businesses, spent about $184,000 on nine city council races in 2017, according to Fox 2 and the Michigan Campaign Finance Network.

Consequently, the family gave more than anyone else to business-friendly candidates.

M.L. Elrick of Fox 2 reports that about half of the money the Moroun companies spent to influence voters was not revealed until after election day because it wasn't recorded until the final days of the election. That meant it did not have to be have to be disclosed until the Super PACs filed their campaign finance reports in January.

Dan Stamper, president of the Morouns' Detroit International Bridge Company, tells Elrick the Morouns and their companies have no control over when the Super PACs spent the more than $200,000 Moroun companies sent them.

Craig Mauger of Michigan Campaign Finance Network reports:

Raquel Castaneda-Lopez, an incumbent Detroit City Council member and one of the candidates the PACs opposed, said the level of involvement from the Morouns in the city’s 2017 election was “shocking.”

“Who they supported was targeted,” Casteneda-Lopez alleged, saying the PACs went after council members who opposed the family’s wishes on specific issues.
