Motown's nine-foot 1877 Steinway grand piano returned to Hitsville Monday afternoon following a complete restoration at New York's Steinway factory, Susan Whitall reports in The Detroit News.
Former Beatle Paul McCartney helped fund the restoration of the piano after he discovered that it didn't play during a 2011 visit to the museum. The piano came from Motown's Studio B, which originally was Golden World Studios, a famed record label that Gordy bought in the late 1960s. Studio B was used by many Motown artists when they needed a larger space than Studio A. Marvin Gaye worked on much of "What's Going On" at Studio B.
Last September, McCartney was the first to play the newly restored piano with Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., at Steinway Hall in New York City, as shown in this four-minute video:
